Cognate with Low German gnid (“gnit”), German Gnitte, Gnitze (“midge, gnat”). Compare also Danish gnid (“gnat”), Swedish gnet (“nit”), Norwegian gnit (“gnat”), Icelandic gnit, nitur (“gnat”).
