From Middle English *irihten, *ȝerihten, from Middle English irihte, ȝerihte (“right”), from Old English ġerihte (“right, due, justice; religious rite, office”); or perhaps an alteration of aright (“to make right, put to rights, treat properly”), from Middle English arihten (“to raise up”).
