From dialectal English (compare Old Scots bais, base (“to beat soundly”)), probably of North Germanic origin, related to Swedish bas (“a beating, flogging”), Swedish basa (“to beat, flog”), Danish bask (“a lash, blow”), Danish baske (“to beat, strike, flap”).
